MATH FACT FLUENCY
"Math facts fluency leads to higher order mathematics.
Through automaticity students free up their working memory and can devoted it to problems solving and learning new concepts and skills (Geary, 1994)
"To build math fact fluency, the most effective strategy is to give students 10-15 minutes per day to practice using what are called derived facts strategies (DFS). Essentially, DSF's are using facts you know to solve facts you don't know." Sam Strother, Associate Director Developing Mathematical Thinking Institute.
Facts Master Challenge
One of the most important skills students will need for senior math is automatic recall of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. I strongly encourage all students to practice math facts at home for at least 5 minutes each night. Our class will be charting progress as we take Facts Master practice tests each week, with the goal of correctly answering all 300 problems in under 10 minutes. Facts Master tests are leveled by degree of difficulty:
Students will take the beginning test until they complete all 300 questions in under 10 minutes. They then will move to the intermediate test and eventually the advanced test. Download the different Facts Master sheets below and use this online stopwatch to time yourself!
Beginning Fact Master (multiplication, addition, subtraction)

Intermediate Fact Master (multiplication through 12's, division through 11's mixed addtion/ subtraction)

Advanced Fact Master (mixed multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, fractions, decimals, percents)

To help practice multiplication facts, our class will also periodically take 3-minute Multiplication Challenges as math warm-ups. Download these below.

This is the chart that can be used to practice the automatic recall of times table facts. Students use the times table they are working on and go through the list timing themselves. For example if they were practicing their 3x tables. It would be 3x4=12 3x6=18 3x7=21 and so on. The timer is stopped when they get to 3x9=27. Students are not racing each other they are recording their personal bests. They can use the timer found at http://www.online-stopwatch.com/ |
