Flipped Classroom- My Journey
It has all started with a lot of questions. What is a flipped classroom, is it possible in my classroom, what tools would I need to make it happen?
So, what did I do and where am I now?
First stop was 'Google' of course! The one stop shop for all of my unanswered questions. One problem- information overload!! So I backed out graciously and lived to fight another day...well not quite... I got distracted and probably laminated something.
My next foray into Flipped-ness led me to join a few flipped classroom groups on Edmodo. That way I could have professional development at my finger tips, as others talked about how they were embarking on their 'Flipped Classroom' journey. Borderline stalking -yes...did it get the job done...partially. It definitely added fuel to the fire. Reading about other innovative, educator's activities only added to my excitement about the possibilities of having a 'Flipped Classroom'

Here we go!!
Check my new Order of Operations- PEMDAS page to see my progress into a flipped classroom. When I create a new page for students, I am providing links to video tutorials, songs, games and tasks. I am currently using Educreations on my iPad to create my own educational videos and I am finding www.learnzillion.com to be a fabulous source of lessons and guided practice. Below are some of my attempts at creating video tutorials (some better than others:) Rather than just using homework as revision, students are now able to learn and practice new concepts as they are guided by video tutorials, games and external links.
Why do I think this is important?
I am teaching my students to trust in their own ability to FIND THE ANSWERS. There are many things about technology that I am learning about as I go. If I had to wait for the tech guys every time I needed an answer, this website would have never gotten off the ground! I have a skill though, that is able to help me - I know where to look! I know the right questions to ask Google and I know how to evaluate the usefulness of the information that is being provided. I watch the clip and I follow the instructions and I solve my own problems and I fill the gaps in my knowledge, which means... I have learnt something new!

If students go through the process of finding the information to solve the problem or complete the task, they then have a better understanding of that task. Better still, if they then use their new found information to teach someone else (by creating their own Educreations clip, or GoAnimate video or iMovie, or Keynote the list goes on) that new knowledge will forever be cemented in their brains...and they own it!
Where am I now?
It's funny, because now that I use the flipped classroom model in the majority of my teaching it just feels like another strategy in my teaching bag.
Every time I create a page now for my website I create it with the FCM (flipped classroom model) in mind. I allow students to immerse themselves in the content of the topic rather than being the 'expert'. Students are able to delve into videos, interactives and games that helps them build their base knowledge. Then, when I talk to them about the topic, we are speaking the same language.
